Singing can take a lot of courage and a lot of work. Making it is the dream every singer has and desires for. Doing everything you can just to hear that one song play on the radio. Maybe perform it on the stage that you spend forever rehearsing. Singer Makayla Phillips is one girl who has the dream and mind set to make her dreams come true. They say you got to think big to be big! For this young lady, she has absolutely no problem with that concept! With appearances on a variety of musical competition shows, she is a non stopper. Now we will hear what she has to say when it comes to making it in music. Along with hearing where she wants to head in her career.
Q: How old were you when you started singing?
A: I always tell people I started singing in the womb! I actually started pursuing music professionally when I was about ten years old.
Q: Viewers and listeners seem to know you from America’s Got Talent, how did you end up on there?
A: Growing up I always watched shows like America’s Got Talent and American Idol. I auditioned for American Idol first, but found out I was two weeks shy of the age requirement. So they sent me over to America’s Got Talent to audition for them.
Q: Tell us about the experience! Was it everything you hoped for?
A: It was beyond anything I had envisioned for myself. I was hoping to just get a couple of yes’s from the judges, and fingers crossed they didn’t tell me I was horrible. But to get the coveted Golden Buzzer was beyond my wildest dreams!
Q: Since AGT, what else has been going on for you career wise?
A: Since AGT, I auditioned for American Idol for season 3 and made it through to the Top 11 round! After the show ended, I started working with JoNa Music Group, a production company that is writing and producing songs destined to help me secure a record deal.
Q: Where do you see yourself heading in music?
A: I have always wanted to perform for large audiences all over the world, and I still see that in my future. I love to sing and perform for people and I will continue to push myself to make that happen.
Q: For performing, where would your top venue or arena be?
A: I’ve always dreamed of performing on the stage at the Grammy’s or the Super Bowl, that for me will be the biggest accomplishment as far as goals I have set for myself.
Q: Is there an artist you would like to work with?
A: I have so many! I would LOVE to perform with Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Kehlani, to name a few.
Q: Could Broadway ever be in your future or making music videos?
A: I would love to perform in a musical on Broadway. My all time favorite movie is Phantom of the Opera. It got me started with my singing when I was very young! I have performed in many musicals in a small theater class I took when I was younger, so it would definitely be fun to do on the big stage on Broadway.
Q: What have you learned from trying to make it as a singer? What is the hardest lesson you have learned from this journey?
A: I have learned that you have to keep pushing and evolving as an artist! Even after performing on two of the biggest platforms for singers, I still have to get up every day and work hard to make things happen. This business doesn’t come handed to you on a silver platter for most singers, so get up and show up.
