The Nanny in a Nutshell

Perhaps the best way anyone can explain what The Nanny is about is to strap them down and hit play on the theme song. Yes, the opening theme song is catchy and nostalgic, but it also, quite literally, narrates the plot’s entire foundation in song. The lyrics set up the story, and it goes like this:

She was working in a bridal shop in Flushing, Queens, till her boyfriend kicked her out in one of those crushing scenes. What was she to do, where was she to go? She was out on her fanny. So over the bridge from Flushing to the Sheffield’s door,  she was there to sell make up, but the father saw more. She had style, she had flair, she was there. That’s how she became the Nanny. Who would have guessed that the girl we described was just exactly what the doctor prescribed? Now, the father finds her beguiling, watch out C.C., and the kids are actually smiling, such joie de vivre. She’s the lady in red when everybody else is wearing tan. The flashy girl from Flushing, the nanny named Fran.

Now, listen to the delivery of the theme with its accompanying tune. Here, have a listen to the iconic introduction below:

Fun fact about the theme song: Anne Hampton Calloway, an American jazz singer, actress, and songwriter is the one who wrote and sings in the TV series theme.

The memorable theme jingle is considered one of the last great TV series opening themes in sitcom history.

The Nanny is a Fashion Goddess: Fran Fine is Fran Drescher

Unsurprisingly, one of the main reasons The Nanny continues to win and dazzle audiences over, including this new generation, is Fran Drescher’s portrayal of her dazzling role as Fran Fine. She plays a vivacious and dynamic working-class young woman who has spunk, street-smarts, style, flair, and big hair. Above all, she is a caring character central to every plot scheme of mischief she gets herself into.

Nevertheless, her vibrant wardrobe alone deserves accolades from every fashion circle. A major highlight of every episode, is being able to marvel at one of Fran Fine’s iconic outfits—flavored with great panache. A unique signature trait of all the Fine women and their flamboyant style.

Recently, a fan-made edit, that went viral, displays some of Fran’s most memorable iconic fashion fits.  Check out the edit below (credit to mae/@gnoconut):

As noted in the tweet, Fran Drescher herself took notice and approves of this tribute throwback.

Aside from the witty retorts from the butler, Niles, and the rest of the colorful cast, the love story that develops will humor and entertain you.
