The fan-favorite 80s horror/sci-fi series, Stranger Things, is coming back stronger than ever with a new roster of actors joining the long-awaited season 4. Among the new cast, horror icon Robert Englund is confirmed to play a potentially major role for the new season. Robert is no stranger to horror/supernatural as he’s haunted dreams since 1984 as Freddy Krueger. His casting is so fitting given that the show takes place in the 80s and Nightmare on Elm Street was popular in that decade. During promotion for season 2, Stranger Things released a series of posters inspired by classic 80s films which showed Natalia Dyer playing homage to Nightmare on Elm Street! Aside from Robert’s announcement, the show has slowly been revealing new details, new locations, and possible storyline spoilers!
Who Are the New Characters?
Joining Robert this season are 7 other cast members, each giving us a peek at what the new season may be about. “let’s give our new cast members a big Hawkins welcome,” Stranger Things tweeted. A list of characters and descriptions followed:
Robert Englund aka Victor Creel is a disturbed and intimidating man who is imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital for a gruesome murder in the 1950s.
Eduardo Franco aka Argyle: Jonathan’s new BFF. We stan a fun-loving stoner who proudly delivers delicious pizza pies for Surfer Boy Pizza.
Jamie Campbell Bower aka Peter Ballard is a caring man who works as an orderly at a psychiatric hospital. Tired of the brutality he witnesses day after day, will Peter finally take a stand?
Sherman Augustus aka Lt. Colonel Sullivan. He’s an intelligent, no-nonsense man who believes he knows how to stop the evil in Hawkins once and for all.
Mason Dye aka Jason Carver is a handsome, rich athlete who is dating the most popular girl in school. But as a new evil threatens Hawkins, his perfect world begins to unravel.
Tom Wlaschiha aka Dmitri, a smart and charming Russian prison guard. But can he be trusted?
Nikola Djuricko aka Yuri is a seedy and unpredictable Russian smuggler who loves bad jokes, cold hard cash, and crunchy style peanut butter. …..Same.
Joseph Quinn aka Eddie Munson. He’s the head of the Hawkins High official D&D Club, The Hellfire Club.
Spoilers on the New Season
This isn’t the first major piece of information the show has leaked. Since reshoots began, slowly the show has been dropping storyline clues. Right off the bat, the show announced the title of the first episode for season 4, “The Hellfire Club.” We know that Joseph Quinn’s character will play a key role in the club but maybe the kids of Hawkins might have something to do with it too. A picture of Gaten Matarazzo wearing a Hellfire Club t-shirt suggests the theory to be true!

Speaking of theories, Levon Thurman-Hawke has been seen frolicking on the set of Stranger Things. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s Maya Hawke’s younger brother! The sister-brother duo might star alongside each other since the photos circulating show Levon in 80’s punk clothes and he was spotted hanging out on set with Joey Keery whose character, Steve Harrington, is close to Maya’s character.
Where is the New Season Taking Place?
It’s no doubt that Hawkins, Indiana will remain in the picture but a few changes from the season 3 finale and season 4 teaser suggests that evil may lurk beyond the town of Hawkins. At the end of season 3, The Byers are moving away from the home that’s caused them so much pain and they’re taking Eleven (Millie Bobbie Brown) with them. Noah Schnapp confirmed to ET Online that his character Will Byers will have a separate storyline, “so we might be filming, like, in another place,” he said.
Back in March, multiple reports claimed that filming for the new season was taking place at Berry College located in Georgia. Stranger Things is one of many Netflix productions that film primarily in the state of Georgia. A recording of the production at Berry College circulated online, only it had been renamed to Pennhurst Mental Hospital. The mental institute was briefly mentioned by Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin) back in season 1. In the episode, after Dustin and Lucas’ interaction with Eleven in Mike’s basement, the boys tell Mike they find Eleven to be odd. That’s when Lucas suggests she might have escaped from Pennhurst. With the recent news of Robert Englund portrayal of a “disturbed man imprisoned in a psychiatric hospital,” it’s easy to make a connection between the two.
Will Hopper and Billy Return to the New Season?
There’s been so much talk about the new characters that much thought hasn’t gone to whether the full cast will be returning to season 4. The main character in question is Jim Hopper — especially after that major cliffhanger in the season 3 finale where he is presumed to be dead…or is he? If you stuck to the end of the credits, a scene shows a Russian jail where two officers head towards a cell door. Before opening it, the officer is stopped by his colleague who tells him “No, not the American,” which viewers were quick to assume to be Hopper. That would be later confirmed in the season 4 trailer where Hopper is alive and not really that well, held captive in Russia. During an interview at Comic-Con, David Harbour confirms that Hopper’s story isn’t over yet. “In season 4 we will give you a big huge reveal about Hopper’s backstory,” he said.
Let’s not forget the other main character that checked out last season and this one is a little harder to prove they are alive. It’s no secret that Dacre Montgomery’s bad boy, Billy Hargrove, perishes at the end of season 3. However, he posted that caught the attention of fans. Not only is he dressed up as Billy would, but what caused skepticism was the Stranger Things makeup artist, Amy L. Forsythe, standing in the background. She has worked on Stranger Things since 2016. This could, however, be debunked as him getting back into character for flashback shoots so he may or may not be still alive.
When Will Season 4 Premiere?
As of now, it’s still unknown when the new season will premiere. David Harbour revealed in an Instagram Q&A that the show was set to premiere early next year but it will probably be pushed back.
Not everything has to be bad as this year has given the writers of the show time to assess the future of Stranger Things. The Duffer brothers confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that season 4 isn’t the end. “Season four won’t be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is. [The pandemic] has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story,” they said.
For now, fans will have to wait a little bit longer for the season premiere but with what the Duffer brothers claim, it should be worth the wait.
